FORTY YEARS OF THE BEST CHILI AND SEAFOOD!
spring flowers

Carr's Seafood STAND

Dot Williams, the amiable face behind the counter at Carr's Seafood has been at Zerns Farmers market for forty-seven years. The kids who frequent her popular restaurant are often the grandchildren of customers she had forty years earlier!

Starting out at Zerns as counter-staff for Little Richard, Dot continued when her parents took over after a fire in the nineteen sixties at Zerns. Dot, originally from Allentown, and her husband John, who was born in Norristown, turns out consistent food every weekend, and always with a smile.

"My theory about things," says Dot, remembering her own tough early upbringing, "is to try to help people. In these hard, economic times, we have to help each other." She is known to give a free drink to those who can't afford one.

Keeping costs down is challenging, but Dot and John have planted their own garden and their famous chili is made with Williams home-grown vegetables. Most weekdays, John tends the tomatoes, jalapeno and sweet peppers that go from backyard into the steaming chili pot. " It helps me to keep the prices down, and put a little more meat in," says Dot. A 10 ounce bowl of chili sells for $2.25.

Dot's famous clam chowder is made from scratch with fresh clams, but not available in the summer season - - sodas and fries, and shrimp-in-the-basket, or sandwiches are more the summertime fare. See coupon at the bottom for a special discount on food. Visit:  Carr's Seafood Stand # 113, Zerns Farmers Market.

FAST TRACK BARBERS AT ZERNS BARBER SHOP

Joe DiLemmo once owned a barber shop in Boothwyn, close to the Brandywine Race Track in Delaware. With decades of experience, he learned the art of moving fast - - to trim hair efficiently without the fuss and overtime. Along with two brothers in their seventies, Matt and Dave, Joe runs a tight ship and good service at Zerns Barber Shop, which has been a feature of Zerns for the last forty years.

"Customers are good," says Joe, "though the elderly people are starting to disappear on me. I do have one customer who is ninety-nine years old. He comes once a month for a haircut - - short on the sides and flat top. His wife is ninety-six and neither of them use canes!"

Prices at the Barber Shop are $10 for men, $13 for ladies. Visit: Zerns Barber Shop, Stand #145, Zerns Farmers Market.

FABULOUS STITCHERY AT HAPPY LANDINGS CREATIONS

Faye Payne had a successful career as a paralegal in the Philadelphia area. "That was the serious side," she laughs, "becoming an embroiderer brought out the artistic side. I found out that I am more artistic than I realized! I like designing and seeing the designs come out in stitches."

Monograms initially were used as currency in the transition from the barter system to the beginnings of the creation of money, starting with clay coins featuring the initials of the ruler of a region, and royal coats of arms. In modern times, everyone can have the thrill of a monogrammed item.  With today's sophisticated technology, today's artists, like Faye Payne, have taken the simple alphabetical stitchery to a whole other level. At her stand #139 at Zerns Farmers Market, you can have on-site embroidery, designing and monograms while you wait.

Faye's embroidery machine at Happy Landings Creations can produce one thousand stitches a minute at full capacity. Different frames hold and hoop a larger design, and size can go up to 14 x 20 inches. "Come in with an idea for a design and I will create it," says Faye. There are more than fifty thread colors. With children's clothes, parents like pink and purple and different shades of purple, black and white and gold.

A new trend, Faye notes, is monogramming the headrest of a truck. With the first request, Faye's husband, Warren, gently took the material off the customer's headrest by hand. "We were able to monogram it beautifully," recalls Faye, our client wanted his name on one and his wife's name on the other side." The charge for this painstaking service is about $50.

A recent request was for a wheel cover for a jeep; one customer ordered his girlfriend's name and a heart done in a rodeo rope design. Also available are sturdy baby and toddler outfitsin denim, including monogrammed jackets $3.99, dresses and overalls, You can also find logo polo shirts for $15 and personalized name tags. See the coupon at the bottom for a special embroidery offer. Visit: Happy Landings Creations, Stand #139, Zerns Farmers Market.

NEILL BRESLIN:  ENTER THE JEWELER'S GATE AT ZERNS FARMERS MARKET

At the age of seven, bubbling with a child's imagination and curiosity, Neill Breslin loved to help his father work at Dublin Jewelers in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. His connection with jewels and gemstones was instant, and over the years, Neill, GIA certified at the highest level, has created some masterful works of art.

In July of 2003, Neill bought Breslin Jewelers Shop at Zerns Farmers Market from his inventor/jeweler uncle, Dan Breslin. For the past seven years, Neill has been holding court at his showplace, stand #130. "Every weekend brings something new," Neill says. "You never know what's going to happen at Zerns."

Neill does custom design work and has many of his own creations for sale at his stand. Current trends seem to be towards bulky large-stoned rings - -diamonds more often than other stones - - for men. These are Neill's favorite to create, because he says, "they're fun and each one turns out absolutely unique." Customers comment that they come to Breslin Jewelers because of the eclectic collection on display. Among his glittering items for sale are antique filigree brooches, old cameos from Italy, and antique rings.

Along with designing his own jewelry, Neill sells a lot of estate pieces as well as many unique modern pieces. One woman wanted a pendant featuring her child's two front teeth. "Unusual, but we did it for her, and she was really happy," smiles Neill. Even after seven years, Neill still says his favorite part of work is meeting new people and hearing their stories. "Talking with all of the different people that come through each day, you really feel connected to Zerns customers," he explained.

Phone Neill with special requests or questions at 610 473 7468 or visit Breslin Jewelers Shop Stand #130 at Zerns. Designs can be seen on line at: www.dublinjewelersonline.com. Clip the coupon at the bottom of The Zernie for 25% off everything for June, July and August 2010!
