COME ON HOME TO THE CHICKEN COOP
Visit Zerns Market and you are sure to recognize Brenda Fry. Brenda has been at Zerns since she was 13 years old, her first job was selling candy. A Boyertown resident, Brenda used to do sheet metal work and raised a family.
Now she puts secret recipes to work at a food stand called the Chicken Coop, where you can purchase chicken livers and hearts plus a delicate portion of herbal mushrooms as well as her famous gizzards.
A 100-gram serving of chicken gizzards, equal to about 3.5 ounces, contains 2.68 grams of total fat, less than 1 gram of which is saturated. If you are looking for lower fat ways to add protein to your diet, chicken gizzards are a healthier option than high-fat cuts of beef or pork.
Every weekend, Brenda sells more than 150 lbs. of chicken gizzards. They are steeped in spices and simmered 8 hours. You can purchase a 16 oz foam cup for $6, served hot and eaten with a skewer.
Visit Brenda at The Chicken Coop, Stand #107 East Wing.
